Notable author Thomas King -- author of books such as Green Grass, Running Water , The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America , and Indians on Vacation -- has long claimed being Cherokee vis-a-vis his (mostly absent) father. King has shared that he is not Cherokee and is, in fact, a white man.

Born in California in 1943, King is also notable for being a leader in Native American studies in the US and Canada, being awarded the Order of Canada in 2004 for contributions to literature and Indigenous-settler reconcilation.
