As the weather gets colder, keep your holiday plans from going up in flames with a few recommendations from the Greeley Fire Department and the Red Cross.

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Close behind are Christmas and Christmas Eve, both averaging more than double the daily call average.

“Our No. 1 cause of residential fires is cooking,” Greeley Fire Department Risk Reduction Specialist Ryan Alexander said. “And when you get into the holidays, that’s what everybody is doing: cooking.”
