The Cardinals are trading right-hander Sonny Gray to the Red Sox, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Tuesday. St. Louis is set to receive right-hander Richard Fitts and left-hander Brandon Clarke, ranked No. 5 on Boston's Top 30 prospects list, per MLB Pipeline. The clubs have not confirmed the move.
The 36-year-old Gray was set to make $35 million in the final year of his three-year contract, which included a $30 million club option for 2027. He also has a no-trade clause. Boston is expected to rework his contract to a one-year deal with a mutual option, worth $31 million in 2026 and a mutual option buyout of $10 million, per a report from The Athletic.
