Many Democrats were aghast when their side folded on the government shutdown earlier this month. The party did so despite consistently winning the blame game and appearing to have plenty of leverage to force Republicans to extend the enhanced Obamacare subsidies they had demanded.

Democrats clearly gave up some leverage. But Republicans haven’t necessarily won.

The last two days have only reinforced how big of a pickle Republicans remain in on health care ahead of the 2026 midterms.
