At least 58 million packages were stolen last year alone, according to the U.S. Office of the Inspector General , and there are more than your average porch pirates to watch out for this holiday season.
Some scammers are placing notices on doorsteps to call about and retrieve packages. They ask for personal information, Michele Mason, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau, reports.
"We just really have to stay on guard during the holidays," Mason said. "These scams are going to spike, and it just takes a few minutes of paying attention (to protect yourself)."
In addition to paper notices, scammers may also send texts with a link to track packages. However, Mason urges consumers to only check on packages directly through the carrier's website.
