Canadian swimmer Penny Oleksiak has been suspended from competition for two years due to a violation of anti-doping rules, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced. The ban, which is retroactive to July 15, 2025, will last until July 14, 2027. This suspension comes after Oleksiak accepted responsibility for three whereabouts failures that occurred between October 2024 and June 2025.
The ITA defines a whereabouts failure as a combination of three missed tests or failures to provide accurate location information within a 12-month period. Oleksiak, who is 25 years old and hails from Toronto, is Canada’s most decorated Olympian, having won seven Olympic medals, including one gold, two silver, and four bronze. She also has nine world championship medals to her name.
Earlier this year, the ITA informed Oleksiak about the whereabouts case. Following this notification, she withdrew from the world aquatics championships in July and accepted a provisional suspension. In a statement on social media at that time, Oleksiak expressed her commitment to clean sport, saying, "I am and always have been a clean athlete and will be making no further comment at this time."
The suspension will prevent Oleksiak from competing in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, scheduled for July 2028. She did not contest the anti-doping rule violation and has the option to appeal the decision. The ITA's announcement marks a significant moment in the career of one of Canada's most celebrated athletes.
