The Manitoba government plans to rename the bridge over the Winnipeg River on Provincial Road 313 in Lac du Bonnet in memory of Susan and Richard Nowell, the couple who died during this year’s wildfire crisis.

Premier Wab Kinew and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced the tribute Wednesday, saying the renamed structure — the Susan and Richard Nowell Memorial Bridge — will serve as a permanent recognition of the couple’s role in the community and the loss felt across the region.

The province first signalled the plan during this session’s throne speech. Officials said the decision was made after consulting the Nowell family and local leaders in Lac du Bonnet.
