The Emporia City Commission signed a resolution to enter a legal services agreement with Stag Liuzza, L.L.C., and Perry and Trent, L.L.C., to retain legal counsel to pursue settlement and other legal damage claims from manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.

The multidistrict lawsuit will seek damages related to PFAS or “forever chemicals,” which are commonly found in non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics, allegedly contaminating the water supply, potentially leading to harmful health effects if consumed.

Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking emphasized that despite the city’s willingness to join the litigation, the purpose is to ensure clean drinking water for citizens through no-cost eligibility testing, and he does not anticipate alarming results.
