A Connecticut man found guilty of sexually assaulting four underage girls he knew may spend the rest of his life behind bars following a judge's ruling this week.
Rahmani Kabwe, 42, of Bridgeport, who was convicted on 14 charges in September, was sentenced to 47 years in state prison on Monday, Nov. 24, according to the Connecticut State’s Attorney’s Office. He is eligible for parole after 15 years, though there is no guarantee it will be granted.
The assaults happened at two Bridgeport homes between 2019 and 2021, prosecutors said. He sexually abused a fifth girl in 2022 while out on bond following his arrest on the prior attacks.
The four victims testified against Kabwe during the trial, and one spoke to the court before the judge imposed sentencing. Two more were in the gallery to see him put away, the Connecticut Post reported.
Judge Earl Roberts could have sentenced Kabwe to up to 180 years in prison.
"The tragic nature of this case is only overshadowed by its sheer barbarity," Richards said, per The Post. "The facts clearly highlight the societal need to address the epidemic of child exploitation and abuse sweeping the nation."
Kabwe, who was born in Congo, did not speak during the sentencing.
A jury found Kabwe guilty of all 14 charges, including five counts of fourth-degree sexual assault of a minor, three counts of first-degree sexual assault of a minor, three counts of risk of injury to a minor, two counts of second-degree sexual assault, and a single charge of attempted second-degree sexual assault, the prosecutor said.
Along with his 47-year sentence, Judge Roberts ordered Kabwe to register as a sex offender for life, the prosecutor said.
