IOWA CITY, Iowa —

Current and former Hawkeyes are remembering a professor who taught for decades.

Jay Holstein worked in the Department of Religious Studies. He taught tens of thousands of students over more than five decades at the university, including film director Joe Russo, who co-directed several blockbuster Marvel movies.

Russo mentioned Holstein when speaking at the university back in 2018. He said Holstein's teachings impacted his storytelling at Marvel.

Russo said Holstein inspired him to start telling his own stories.

Holstein was 87.
