Attorneys general from 36 states, including Washington and Idaho, are pushing back against what they term federal overreach in regulating artificial intelligence (AI).

This response comes amid reports that Congress may be considering a bill that would limit states from enacting their own laws imposing more regulations on AI. The AGs acknowledged the power of technology but expressed concern in a latter to Congress over its use in targeting vulnerable populations, all while lacking a federal framework.

States are taking measures to ensure safety, and more lawmakers are joining the effort. Missoula representative Zoe Zephyr, a statehouse representative, is one of nearly 300 state lawmakers who have signed a letter urging Congress not to pass any AI preemption laws.
