Entering the offseason, the clear-cut top priority for Craig Breslow and the Red Sox was adding to their starting rotation.
Things are different now, though, as noted by the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
That’s because the Red Sox bolstered their pitching depth when they acquired veteran pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Gray’s arrival has caused the Red Sox to change course with a new “top priority” one month into MLB free agency.
“The Red Sox — who entered the offseason professing a need to add a No. 2 starter and middle-of-the-order bat — now have a bat as their top priority,” Speier wrote, “while taking an opportunistic approach to adding to other parts of the roster (whether a second bat, a trade for another starter — albeit with a thinning farm system
