ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is urging snowmobile riders to gear up for the upcoming season by focusing on safety, registration, and trail conditions.
Snowmobile enthusiasts can start their season as early as December 1, provided certain conditions are met. Trails need a frozen ground, 15 inches of ice where they cross wetlands, and 12 inches of snow for grooming. Riders can check the DNR's snow depth page for updates on trail readiness.
Most of Minnesota's 22,000 miles of trails are maintained by local snowmobile clubs, with updates available online . Riders should ensure their registrations are current and snowmobiles are in good condition. Safety courses are advised for all, and are mandatory for residents born after December 31, 1976.
