Through the decades and the centuries, history has been interwoven with mystery. Many lingering questions, their answers never known and their intrigue forgotten in time, remain suspended on the pages of the past.
During the summer of 1948, Edward C. Duhamel of Charlestown hired two men to dig a drainage ditch on his property located on Post Road – near the shore of Foster Cove – in Charlestown. Duhamel was a successful businessman who had been operating The Willows – a dinner hall and clambake spot in Barnes Point – since 1932.
After inspecting the work of the excavators, Duhamel realized the ditch had not been dug deep enough. Therefore, on June 29 of that year, he procured a shovel and started pitching out more dirt.
