KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - No. 17 Tennessee basketball took down No. 3 Houston in a nail biter, 76-73, in the Players Era Men’s Championship on Tuesday night.
The Volunteers get their revenge on the Cougars as it was Houston who eliminated Tennessee in the NCAA Elite Eight last season.
Tennessee’s defense shined in the contest. At one point in the second half, the Vols held the Cougars scoreless for seven minutes and 24 seconds. The game came down to the wire, as Bishop Boswell and Ja’Kobi Gillespie both hit some clutch free throws to keep Tennessee on top as Houston was playing catchup.
Gillespie paved the way for Tennessee yet again, ending with a team-high 22 points. It was also a great night for Boswell with 10 points, a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and three steals.
