Wicked For Good director Jon M Chu has opened up about the musical sequel’s poignant final moments.

At the end of the movie, when Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande ’s characters have parted ways for the last time, the film ends with a flashback to Elphaba and Glinda’s younger days at Shiz University, with the latter leaning in to whisper something in the former’s ear.

Wicked devotees will know this is a direct homage to the stage musical’s original poster, which depicts an illustration of a similar scene.

Speaking to Variety , Jon shared that it was “ always the plan” to end the second Wicked movie “on the whisper” as a surprise for fans of the original show.
