The current population survey estimates there were 9.8 million one-parent households in 2023 in the U.S. The percentage of children living in single-parent households nearly tripled between 1960 and 2023, increasing from 9% to 25% .
Almost a quarter of American children under the age of 18 live with one parent and no other adults — more than three times the rate of children in other countries around the world who live under the same circumstances. The global average of single-adult households, excluding the U.S., hovered at 7% in 2019, according to a PEW Research Center study .
These parishes had the lowest percentage of single-parent households, in ascending order:
Cameron Parish, 12% single-parent homes;
Plaquemines Parish, 14% single-parent homes;
Livingston Parish, 21%
