Syracuse, N.Y. -- A lake effect snowstorm is expected to drop heavy snow across parts of Upstate New York on Thanksgiving Day and Friday, making driving hazardous during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Wind gusts of 40 mph or more will add to difficult driving conditions by blowing snow around and reducing visibility. Those winds could be strong enough to cause isolated power outages, according to the National Weather Service .
“Total snow accumulations greater than 7 inches are possible in the most persistent lake effect bands,” the weather service said of Central New York. “Winds could gust as high as 40 mph, producing blowing and drifting snow and possible whiteout conditions.”
