MENTOR, Ohio — When Sean Durbin noticed he was struggling to find words and pulling back from his normally boisterous family gatherings, he knew something wasn't right. What he didn't expect was a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) at just 57 years old.
"I was having a hard time getting my words out," Sean recalls. "It was like a slow delay. I was very good at speaking before, but then it just slowed down for me."
His wife, Lisa Ihnat-Durbin, noticed other changes, too.
"Sean was just very low energy and a little bit apathetic towards things he would normally care about," she says. "He went from extrovert to introvert."
