Rachel Reeves' Budget is planning to hit electric vehicle drivers with a new pay-per-mile tax, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OPR) has confirmed.
The OBR mistakenly released its forecast prior to the Chancellor speaking this afternoon, in an error it has subsequently apologised for.
EV motorists will now face a charge of around 3p per mile on top of other road fees from April 2028.
This means drivers will be charged for every journey made, as much as £12 if you choose to travel between London and Edinburgh.
Ms Reeves' change is said to aim to offset lost revenue generated by fuel duty, which is paid by diesel and petrol car owners.
