Scotland's beleaguered North Sea oil and gas industry has received a welcome boost after Ed Miliband announced plans that will allow some new drilling in existing fields. ‌

The North Sea Strategy out today means new drilling will be allowed in a way that can be "tied back" to fields already in production - an idea first floated at the UK Labour conference in September. ‌

Labour has banned all new exploration licenses for the North Sea unless previously committed to before the 2024 election. ‌

But there will be no scrapping of the windfall tax despite widespread industry lobbying.

It comes at a time the North Sea energy sector is losing an estimated 1,000 jobs per month.
