CLEVELAND, Ohio — Football coaches have mastered the art of saying a lot while revealing almost nothing. In a refreshingly candid and hilarious segment of the Orange and Brown Talk podcast , host Dan Labbe and film analyst Lance Reisland, a former coach, drafted their favorite coaching clichés — those well-worn phrases that fill press conferences but leave reporters rolling their eyes.
Labbe kicked off the mock draft by selecting perhaps the most ubiquitous phrase in football: “Next man up.”
“I hear it a lot. And as I looked at my board, I figured this is the one I have to take first. Next man up,” Labbe said, explaining how absurd it sounds when coaches use it to suggest that losing a star player like Myles Garrett wouldn’t be devastating.
