Tom Sachs has brought back his original “boring” sneaker.
The Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose Shoe “Studio” has been restocked three years after its debut release. It was the first colorway for the silhouette, which was designed to be simple and functional. Color is largely eschewed, as the upper makes use of shades of white, cream and gray. A tab midsole sits above a black outsole, while tongue and heel pulls appear in blue.
Marketing for the General Purpose Shoe hailed the shoe as “boring” and delivered the manifesto: “Your sneakers shouldn’t be the most exciting thing about you. They are tools, and what matters about your tools is that they work.”
Aside from utility, the artist also wanted the General Purpose Shoe to be more accessible following the hype of his Mars Yard 2.0.
