Spoilers ahead for “Rental Family”

Brendan Fraser's new film, “Rental Family,” explores belonging, authenticity and one unconventional business model.

The Oscar winner portrays Phillip, a struggling middle-aged American living in Tokyo taking a number of small gigs in hopes of getting another big break. He then gets an opportunity with a business that forever changes his life: a "rental family" agency.

Essentially, actors like Philip get paid to play stand-in roles in strangers' lives. They can get hired to pose as family members, friends, partners, people whom they've had affairs with and now must apologize to their spouses, or whomever the client needs.

“Rental Family” is not based on a true story. However, it does bring to light the very real family rental businesses in Japan.
