State schools could face closures, larger class sizes and cuts to after-school clubs, education leaders have warned after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a major funding shake-up.

From 2028/29, the cost of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision will be fully absorbed into the existing Department for Education (DfE) budget for state schools, rather than the budget for local authorities, Rachel Reeves has announced.

The Government has not set out how it intends to account for the £6bn cost with major reforms to the SEND system, including the provision of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP), due early in the new year. New Feature
