A Port Dover couple is warning others about the dangers of fraud – and a bank’s initial reaction to their loss – after their dream vacation turned into a financial nightmare.
Roger and Lisa Buis recently ventured to Florence for a trip in the heart of Italy, but things were derailed less than an hour after arrival when they attempted to use a vending machine to purchase a pair of tram tickets for less than five euros. After tapping their bank card and attempting to insert cash unsuccessfully, Roger elected to use his BMO Mastercard at the machine.
The screen showed the payment had been declined, so Lisa successfully used a prepaid credit card for the fare; however, before they arrived at their hotel, the couple received an alert that more than $4,000 had been charged to their Mastercard
