WASHINGTON — DC streateries may have just gotten a big break. DC Councilmember Charles Allen introduced emergency legislation to make changes to the cost and design restrictions for the DC Department of Transportation’s streateries rules.

The emergency bill will have two changes: address concerns made by D.C.-based restaurants and grant the Public Space Committee more discretion to grant exemptions to businesses related to placement and enclosures. This will make sure that dining experiences inside the enclosures are comfortable all year long.

Allen’s legislation lowers the price per square foot to $15, placing it slightly higher than the cost charged for an enclosed sidewalk, but lower than the DC Department of Transportation’s proposed $20 per square foot.
