The taste of Irn-Bru could be about to change again with maker AG Barr saying it will have to ‘review the implications’ of a change to the sugar tax on fizzy drinks.

Scotland’s other national drink is facing a sugar crush, with the level the tax is applied from due to be cut from 5g of the natural sweetener per 100m of liquid, to just 4.5g.

Currently, Irn-Bru has around 4.7g - with the amount of sugar cut in half when the tax was first applied in 2018.

Now AG Barr has hinted that further reductions may be in the pipeline, with the new soft-bevy levy level due to come into force in 2028.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed the measures in Wednesday’s budget, after they were trailed by UK Government Health Secretary Wes Streeting earlier in the week.
