DETROIT — An undocumented man from Sri Lanka with a history of sex crime convictions in Canada was arrested in Detroit on Nov. 12 and told authorities that Gunasekera was working as an associate professor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a Nov. 25 news release that Sumith Gunasekera was taken into custody during a law enforcement operation. Officials said Gunasekera claimed employment at Ferris State University during processing.

According to ICE, his criminal history includes multiple arrests and convictions in Canada and the United States. Peel Regional Police in Brampton, Ontario, first arrested him on Aug. 28, 1998, for uttering death threats.
