LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a coalition of attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to stop the federal government from cutting off Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for thousands of lawful permanent residents.

The lawsuit challenges new guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stating that certain immigrants, including permanent residents who were granted asylum or admitted as refugees, are not eligible for food assistance.

The attorneys general argue that the guidance violates federal law and could cost states a lot more money. They are asking the court to declare it illegal.
