OMAHA, Neb. —

The Harney Street bridge opened to traffic Wednesday afternoon with a new and improved look.

"We're declaring today a new holiday in Omaha, it's called Happy Bridge Day," Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. said.

The bridge has been under reconstruction since its demolition in February .

"One of the things that we want the people of Omaha to know is that this bridge was going to be replaced anyway, so by doing it in conjunction with the streetcar, that just makes a lot more sense," Ewing said.

New streetlights, railings and track spots for the future streetcar can be seen on the bridge now.

Streetcar tracks will be placed later by Kiewit; Hawkins Construction is in charge of the bridge rebuild.
