WASHINGTON — Two West Virginia National Guard members were shot Wednesday near the White House, the state’s governor said.
Governor Patrick Morrisey initially confirmed their deaths in a social media post but later backtracked on their condition.
"We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information," Morrisey posted about half an hour after an initial post that the guardsmen had died. "Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community."
A suspect who was in custody also was shot and has injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official not authorized to discuss the matter publicly
