BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - With Thanksgiving just a day away, a growing number of families are turning to local farms for their holiday ingredients instead of braving crowded grocery stores.
Glade Road Growing in Blacksburg says the days leading up to the holiday have been some of the busiest in the farm’s 15-year history, with steady demand for produce, meats and specialty items.
“Yesterday was probably our highest sales single day on record,” owner Sally Walker said. “We had a lot of people coming in, we had a lot of new customers… We did about 100 turkeys this year, and they all sold.”
Walker says the surge reflects a growing interest in food raised close to home and without chemicals. She says customers are willing to pay higher prices to support local agriculture.
