Loved ones will gather to remember Viola Fletcher, who survived the Tulsa Race Massacre , during two memorials Saturday, Nov. 29.
Fletcher died at 111 on Monday, Nov. 24. She was the oldest living person who witnessed the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. During the tragedy, a white mob destroyed Greenwood, a wealthy Black community in Tulsa, and killed an estimated 300 Black people.
Memorials will be held at noon at the Center for Arts, Events & Community in Bartlesville and then at 6 p.m. at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa. Attendees should wear white to the Tulsa event.
Tiffany Crutcher, the executive director of the Terence Crutcher Foundation, is planning the memorials for Fletcher, who many lovingly called Mother Fletcher.
