Everywhere I turn, lawyers are in high demand in these troubling and unprecedented times. Protecting immigrants’ rights, representing corporate clients, fighting against ICE detention and advocating for social justice are just a few high-pressure reasons why an attorney’s job is rarely nine-to-five. Not surprisingly, these stressors can disproportionately lead to substance use, mental illness and burnout among legal minds.

As an addiction medicine physician who has worked in homeless shelters, Rikers Island jail and advocacy spaces, I have crossed paths with many attorneys, judges and other legal professionals.
