It’s always a great day for talk radio, except when the news happens to be that one of the greats plans to hang up his microphone way sooner than his fans wanted.

Say it ain’t so, but John Oakley will host his final afternoon drive show for Toronto 640 AM on Friday.

“When it comes to AM talk radio in Toronto, he’s one of the pillars: Consistent (and) highly regarded,” said radio expert and podcaster Toronto Mike.

For the past decade, Oakley has been doing the 3 p.m.-6 p.m. shift. Prior to that, he was a stalwart on the morning show after decades of nighttime radio in Orillia, Montreal and eventually on CFRB (now Newstalk 1010) in Toronto.
