Two National Guard members were shot Wednesday afternoon near the White House. Officials provided conflicting reports on their conditions, but in the latest update shortly before 5 p.m., FBI Director Kash Patel said the victims are in critical condition.
The victims were ambushed, D.C.’s mayor and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said. A man turned a corner and fired at the guard members, MPD's Executive Assistant Chief of Specialized Operations Jeffery Carroll said.

“This is a targeted shooting,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
The victims were shot just before 2:30 p.m., right next to Farragut Square Park and two blocks north of the White House.
