A gas line near South Lafayette Street was struck Wednesday morning, causing a leak that closed the road for several hours.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called about 11 a.m. to the 2700 block of Lafayette, a news release said. The street had to be closed from Pontiac to Leith streets, and a public safety alert was sent to residents, urging them to avoid the area.
City crews were using a mini excavator to dig between the sidewalk and the road. It struck a six-inch gas line.
The gas leak was stopped by NIPSCO about 1:45 p.m., and the road closure continued as the utility repaired the line, a news release said. The road was reopened as of 4:10 p.m., the Fort Wayne Police Department said.
No one was injured.
