Paul Doyle broke down in tears as he pleaded guilty to 31 offences relating to him driving a car into crowds of Liverpool fans during the title-winning celebrations in May.

The 54-year-old, of Burghill Road in West Derby, went on trial yesterday and had refused to accept his guilt, pleading not guilty to dangerous driving, affray, 17 charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, nine counts of causing GBH with intent and three counts of wounding with intent.

But in a shocking U-turn, Doyle's defence counsel asked to speak to the prosecution just minutes before they were due to open their case in front of the jury of seven men and five women.
