Sinead Kavanagh was arrested on Monday following an altercation on a plane in Spain.
Kavanagh, a former Bellator women's title challenger, was arrested for allegedly assaulting two agents of the Civil Guard on a Ryanair flight that was scheduled to depart from Gran Canaria, Spain, to Dublin, Ireland, around 8:30 p.m. local time.
Sources told Atlantico Hoy regarding the incident, and a video from Spain's Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (Unified Association of Civil Guards) of the alleged incident later surfaced on Tuesday.
According to the report, the captain halted takeoff due to Kavanagh's "violent attitude" towards the crew. Canarias 7 reports that Kavanagh assaulted crew members "multiple times" prior to the departure, which prompted the captain to call the Civil Guard. Two agents from the Civil Guard boarded the plane to remove Kavanagh, and that's when the brawl broke out. After several minutes of struggle, Kavanagh was arrested and taken to a holding cell in the airport.
Kavanagh was set free and given a "provisional release" after appearing in court in Telde, Spain, on Tuesday. She remains under investigation for assaulting the two agents. One of the officers, whom Kavanagh allegedly attacked, was placed on medical leave.
Kavanagh, 39, was last seen in action in June 2024 when she lost to Arlene Blencowe at Bellator Champions Series 3 in Dublin, Ireland. Kavanagh was with Bellator for eight years and fought many of their top names. Her biggest career moment came in 2021 when she challenged MMA legend Cris Cyborg for her women's featherweight title. She lost the fight by first-round KO. Kavanagh trains out of SBG Ireland, which is the gym where Conor McGregor fought out of during his MMA days.
