DERBY, Vt. (WCAX) - Hunters are in the woods right now, and some are on the water, as one teen discovered when he made an unexpected rescue on Derby Pond.

Boating season is long gone on Derby Pond, but 19-year-old Griffin Marquis needed to make one more canoe trip out to the middle.

“We were all just in shock. Like, woah. None of us saw that coming,” Marquis said.

The teen was in his truck on his way home from work when he got a call from his grandfather telling him a deer was in trouble. “The deer was about a hundred yards out from shore,” Marquis said.

Griffin jumped into action and canoed out to the distressed doe that had fallen through the ice and was stuck. “The deer was pretty shaken up. It didn’t have a whole lot of energy left,” Marquis said.
