Political analysts and observers skewered a GOP congressman on Wednesday for what they called a "disgusting" take on the shooting that left two National Guard troops critically injured.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) made a post on X that conflated Rep. Elissa Slotkin's (D-MI) comments about military members having the right to disobey illegal orders with the shooting of two National Guard troops. Slotkin was one of six Democrats to appear in a video telling military members that they don't have to follow illegal orders, a video that garnered significant criticism from the right.
"After Elissa Slotkin sowed the seeds of a soft coup—alongside Arizona’s @SenMarkKelly—she doubled down on baseless claims that heroic National Guardsmen would harm American citizens," Biggs wrote in the post. "Two Guardsmen have now been tragically assaulted in DC. Disgusting."
Political observers and analysts raised significant concerns about the post.
"That is not leadership. It is narrative engineering," political advocate Mike Young posted on X. "Slotkin and Kelly restated the basic principle drilled into every service member. You do not obey an illegal command. You do not surrender your oath to any president."
"Hey Andy!!! You have no idea what this shooter’s motive was! But sure, go ahead and make crap up!" lawyer Tom Ryan posted on X.
"What's disgusting is this tweet," Gregg Nunziata, executive director of the Society for the Rule of Law, posted on X.
