JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. —
Residents in one Alabama county are asked to keep holiday cooking grease out of the drain by using a free cooking grease recycling program.
Jefferson County has recycled more than 45,000 gallons of cooking oil over the past 15 years and offers 21 drop-off locations across the county.
Residents can use provided plastic containers or their own, as long as they are non-glass containers.
"And, we just want everybody, to utilize this service that's available to them, because when grease goes down your household pipes, it causes clogs. And that can be super expensive. It also gets expensive for the county," said Helen Hays, county spokesperson.
