KIPAHULU, Hawaii – The pilot project that released five alala (Hawaiian crows) into the forests of Maui in November of 2024 is taking steps to expand the flock. Two alala, a male and female, were recently translocated to the field aviary where the first five birds got their start more than a year ago.

Prior to the translocation of the two new birds, members of Mauis manu ohana and project partners including San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, University of Hawaii and the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife gathered at the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP) campus in Olinda for a special send-off ceremony. Kekai Robinson from the Maui County Department of Oiwi Resources led a pule (blessing) that emphasized how the effort brings together culture and aina and reintegrates this specie
