When someone crudely tied a Union Jack flag to the railings outside a Muslim community hub in Birkenhead it was hard to interpret it as anything other than a hostile gesture.

Ibraham Syed, from The Wirral Deen Centre on Borough Road in Birkenhead, said he felt the placing of the flag had been “intended to cause offence”.

Instead of responding with anger, fear and anxiety the centre decided to fly the flag from a window.

“We thought a strong and powerful response would be to show that this is our flag and we are proud British Muslims”.

“My parents worked and lived here, my grandparents came here. We needed to crush the misconception that Muslims aren't regarded as British.”
