Brian Logan leaned back in his folding chair, puffed a cigar and listened intently to the roar of the crowd. He had heard a similar cacophony from the nearby stadium over his nearly three decades of coaching.

But on that late summer evening in August, he wasn’t sure if the cheers and ringing cowbells were the sounds of triumph or defeat for his Weequahic High football team.

That’s because Logan began the 2025 season suspended for one game by the state athletic association for telling a game official in the 2024 season finale, “Well, (expletive) you, too.”

Logan, who lives a block from the school, finally breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the public address announcer shout the final, “Weequahic 14, Mountain Lakes 12.”

“I made my son the interim coach and he went and won the game,”
