NEW YORK (WPIX) — The 99th rendition of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is about to hit the streets of New York City.
It was originally known as the Macy's Christmas Parade as an effort to give holiday sales a boost for the new Macy's store, according to the Library of Congress. On Nov. 27, 1924, the tradition began and has only gotten bigger every year since.
The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons were not part of the celebration until 1927, when Felix the Cat was introduced as the first. Now, Labubus and other notable toys and characters dominate the field.
The parade was first televised in 1947, giving a national audience a chance to watch floats and balloons stroll New York streets for the first time. During World War II from 1942 to 1944, the parade was put on hold d
