Police in Hong Kong have stated they will do everything possible to assist and investigate a devastating fire that has killed at least 55 people in an apartment building complex.

Professor Jiang Liming from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University told the BBC that the fire rapidly escalated due to the apartments lacking fire-resistant window guards or protective measures.

In connection with the tragedy, authorities have detained officials from the companies responsible for the construction and maintenance of the buildings. These officials are being questioned to provide their accounts of the incident and help determine the causes of the catastrophic fire.
