A lawsuit filed this week on behalf of Hamtramck mayoral candidate Muhith Mahmood asks the city and Wayne County to count 37 votes found the day after the election, alleging that mistakes were made by election officials.

The lawsuit was filed Monday, Nov. 24, the day before the Wayne County Board of Canvassers approved a recount in the mayoral race that will take place on Dec. 2, but that recount will currently not include the 37 votes. Only six votes currently separate Mahmood, who has 2,060 votes, and his opponent, Adam Alharbi, who is currently in the lead with 2,066 votes. Alharbi opposes the counting of the 37 votes, saying that election fraud is a problem in Hamtramck.
