A well-known Oakland County nonprofit group’s plans to move out of its historic building in downtown Birmingham and possibly sell it could turn into a legal battle with the city.

The Community House announced Nov. 3 that the organization would become the Birmingham Area Community Foundation, focused on providing scholarships for students and support for smaller nonprofits in and around the city. Because of the switch, the Community House’s leaders said its operations at the building at 380 S. Bates St. are not required and would cease July 1, 2026.
